Project Description:
I am writing to apply for a Grant-in-Aid from the VdGSA to support my purchase of a bass viol bow from my viol teacher, Gail Ann Schroeder. The bow is a Marais model made by Fausto Cangelosi in Florence, Italy. The total cost of the bow is $2500, and I am seeking a grant of $2000 to help cover the purchase. I plan to use my own funds to cover the difference.
My acquisition of this bow will facilitate my continued technical advancement on the viol for the purposes of teaching and performing. The bow, which I have already experimented with extensively, enables me to play at a far higher level than what I have been accustomed to in the past. I am excited about the possibilities that the purchase of this bow will afford me and, by extension, other viol players.

Qualifications:
I have played the viol since 2012, when as a graduate student in musicology I joined the Consort of Viols led by Brent Wissick at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have attended the annual Conclave every year since 2017, and this past summer I took part in Consort Cooperative on the bass, which involved intense rehearsal and performance of works by Lupo, Byrd, Legrenzi, William Harris, and a fellow co-op participant. I have played viol on a regular basis for the past decade, including several paid performances on the treble. In May I have been engaged to accompany the Ann Arbor Grail Singers (Ann Arbor, MI) for their spring concert.
In recent years I have devoted more time to improving my bass viol technique by practicing regularly, taking lessons with Gail Ann Schroeder, and learning more challenging repertoire. Eventually I would like to teach lessons and/or coach viol ensembles in some capacity. Currently I live in the Triangle area of North Carolina, where there are a considerable number of amateur viol players as well as several professional performers. Although I already play at least twice weekly in various groups, I plan to become more involved with this community as a performer, coach, teacher, and recruiter of new players.
