Briefly, the funds are for a new tenor viol made by Francis Beaulieu. This would be my first non-mass-produced instrument, and the first time I have had the pleasure of working with a luthier who will be making the instrument specifically for me. I have been on Francis' waiting list for four years now, and I originally had put my name in for a bass – I thought that if I was going to be a "serious" viol player I would need a good bass to play the solo rep, lead continuo groups, etc. Last year, however, when it came time to put my deposit down, I decided to ask for a tenor: for one thing, my bass is a perfectly good instrument, and I am not a particularly accomplished soloist (I am certainly not going to be playing /Es ist vollbracht/ for a major orchestra anytime soon), so for the scope of what I need it for it works quite well. In the intervening years between my decision to make the investment in an instrument and actually starting the process (especially my experiences at Conclaves and particularly in CC), I realized that my strengths as a conductor and choral singer made me particularly well-suited to playing the inner voices of a consort, and so I decided that a tenor would be a better investment.

I have a separate savings account into which all of my workshop teaching fees/other workshop honoraria go, supplemented a bit by my main sources of income. I have a good relationship with the local early music society, so I will be working with them to perhaps solicit a small additional grant. (Although, they are currently dealing with the cancellation of their big summer festival, so we'll see what I can do in the next few months!)

Since picking up the viol for the first time in 2007 and attending my first Conclave in 2008, I have been active in the VdGSA, particularly by serving a number of leadership roles at Conclave and one term on the board as the YP Representative. Although mostly drawn to consorts – including playing with Tahoma Consort (Seattle), Notre Dame Consort of Viols (South Bend), and Alchymy Viols (Indianapolis), I have also played continuo for (among others) New Trinity Baroque (Atlanta), Echoing Air (Indianapolis), and the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Choir for their performance of the St. John Passion (as above: just continuo, not the solo!). I have taught viol classes at the Mountain Collegium summer workshop, at which I have been on faculty since 2011, and I am currently serving as the Consort Co-op Coordinator at Conclave.
