Committee Notes:
This is weird - I thought there were some notes about Karen's application?? I thought we had all agreed that she deserved some help and that something like $1000 was thrown out as a possible amount. Am I making this up? This one seems fairly easy to get off the table...
She asked for $1000. I don't think there were any notes for her application. David and I did discuss it in Boston. I included her in my notes for Micah. That may be what you are thinking of, Jack. My inclination is to give her $1000 not only because she has a good application but also because she seems to take into account the reality of what funding from VDGSA might be.

Where are the recommendations? (sorry, just curious)

More weirdness - I thought we had something from Jane. I don't remember seeing anything from Tobi. Did I also make up the part about seeing Jane's rec?
Everything that was uploaded about Karen Burciaga is listed below, under "Files Submitted". The info in the database agrees with the actual files that were uploaded. All I can think is that Jane and Tobi's letters didn't ever get uploaded, if they were even written.
Well, I guess Karen should be contacted about this. Since I know her, and also Jane and Tobi, I didn't think about letters of recommendation. I did hear her play in Boston on the Gamba Gamut concert with Long and Away. She plays well.

Project Description:
I have an administrative job at a non-profit music school, and my income is just enough to pay the bills and my student loan. Any extra that I make playing gigs also goes into savings and towards paying off debt. I have been saving over the past several years to buy a viol but am still daunted by the cost of a new instrument, especially after purchasing a violin which was necessary for my career. Gabriela Guadalajara has been kind enough to allow me to set up a payment plan, for which Im very grateful. While I wouldnt call myself a starving artist, Im not in a position to take such a large purchase lightly any help the VdGSA can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Qualifications:
Since discovering the viol in college, playing in consorts has been central to my enjoyment and understanding of early music. A violinist by trade, Ive been fortunate enough to have lessons and coachings on my secondary instrument with some of the finest teachers in the gamba world thanks to VdGS-NE workshops and the Amherst festival. Jane Hershey has been my principal teacher and a guiding force. She has been key in keeping me on my toes, pushing me in just the right ways whether to learn tenor, befriend a new clef or strengthen my technique. My local consort Long Away plays an important part of my musical life. With this group Ive had the chance to play everything from Franco-Flemish works to 17th-c English masterpieces. We will continue to organize concerts in Boston and New York and look forward to expanding our repertoire this spring we explored Spanish works, and next fall we plan to present a concert of French repertoire. Lastly, I have relied on the generosity of older players loaning me various trebles over the past 8 years. The opportunity to own my very own instrument after all this time is both a relief and a tremendous satisfaction.
