Project Description:
I would like to buy the treble viol that I have had on loan from Bradford Arthur for several years. It is evaluated at $2000, and I use it to teach (I have a student on treble), at our monthly viol gathering, to play with recorders, and also to work with students in public schools. I am working as a substitute teacher and building a private studio as a bass and gamba teacher, but it has been slow going here in Ann Arbor and my yearly income is still in the 20,000s. I am working to develop better income streams, but promoting a musical program also requires investment, so it is still not possible for me to fund the whole purchase. I will be supplementing any grant with monthly payments to complete the sum. (I put in $1500 but I now that is the high end- whatever is possible would be great.)

Qualifications:
I have a Master's in Music on double bass from the University of Michigan, and a Diploma in Early Music, also on double bass, from the Toulouse Conservatory in France. I began playing viol in Toulouse and had some early lessons from Philippe Pierlot. I was able to study with Enid Sutherland here in Ann Arbor for a year, and have enjoyed an occasional lesson with Phil Serna, Susie Napper and Emil Walhout. I have played professionally for a long time, accompanying vocal groups and in recital, and benefitted greatly form the teaching workshop recently held in Massachussetts (thanks again, VdGSA!)

My name is Ann Marie Borders. I am a music teacher at Carpenter Elementary School. I am writing a letter in support of Janet Cannon.
Ms. Cannon is an inspiring musician who has performed wonderful mini-concerts in my classroom and in the school. I also admire her work as a conductor—she has led concerts featuring the Ann Arbor Recorder Society. I have also had the privilege of working with her as my substitute teacher for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition to her exceeding all expectations—flawlessly completing the lesson plans—she enhances the assigned objectives with individual instruction, musical performances, and stories about instruments including the viola da gamba. The students love learning about new things and hearing her play Renaissance and Baroque music, styles neither commonly heard by children nor taught in elementary school. These lessons enrich their lives and open the doors to future possibilities.
While I have been teaching in the Ann Arbor schools for over twenty years, I remember my days as a substitute teacher. It is a challenging job with little remuneration. I assume her financial resources are limited and need to be supplemented. Thus I hope you will grant her request. I certainly support it without reservation.

I am writing in support of Janet Cannon's application for a VdGSA Grant-in-Aid to assist in the purchase of a treble viol she has been using. I have had a number of opportunities to observe Janet in action: I have worked with her privately, had the chance to observe her at Conclave (both in a musical sense and in the service as a custos), as well as at the VdGSA's Teacher Professional Development Initiative. I firmly believe that her work as a proponent of the viola da gamba in schools is the sort of service that the VdGSA has, and continues to support, making her an ideal candidate for a grant. Most recently, we have been talking about her work in schools and I thought she had a lot of very astute commentary and focus in the group meetings at the weekend workshop. Janet's positivity and intelligence as a performer and teacher are keenly well-developed and I think she has a great deal to offer the society, making such a grant a well-placed and effective investment. Additionally, with a smaller society presence in that part of Michigan, I think Janet is well-placed to grow interest in the viol and I believe she will make a difference there.
