Dear Wendy,
The newly founded viol consort "quaver" has asked me to write in
support of their VdGSA Grant-in-Aid application for start-up funds.
As you may know, this group will consist of Loren Ludwig, Marie Dalby,
Brady Lanier and Tobi Szuts. Frankly, I think the combination of
musical talent, intellect, experience and personalities has the
potential to be smashing. Their concept of doing a mix of traditional
and pop genres makes it a unique proposal AND they all have the skills
to arrange AND perform this music in a way that will make their outreach
effective. Brady is the newest to join the VdGSA family so to speak,
but he is a very solid professional cellist and professional arranger.
I first met him at the St Olaf 2006 conclave where he played solo
Corelli mvts on the bass gamba in my class with very impressive skills.
And Tobi attended his first conclave at Portland in 2000 when he was
still an undergrad at Reed. He is a doctoral student in the sciences at
Harvard, but plays like a pro. And of course Loren and Marie are beyond
description!!! These young people have the potential to really lead with
this innovative idea. I say give them some funds.
