Project Description:
A bass viol bow- I currently do not own one and as I am in the beginnings of my Historical Performance degree at Peabody, it would be fantastic to have a good bow of my own to advance my studies and career. I have contacted bow maker Harry Grabenstein, and have been discussing bow prices and availabilities with him. All of his bow prices are availble and online on his website http://www.hfgbowmaker.com

Qualifications:
I am a full time student at The Peabody Conservatory majoring in baroque cello and minoring in viola da gamba, where the cost of living and tuition is very high. There is no way I can afford a new bow of my own in the foreseeable future so I am very grateful for the VDGSA to offer these grants!

Dear Ms. Terry,
I am pleased to recommend cellist Jamie Gallupe for a Career Development Grant-in-Aid at the Viola da Gamba Society of America.
Jamie is a former student of mine in the cello studio at Eastern Michigan University and she is currently pursuing her graduate degree in the Historical Performance program at the Peabody Institute of Music. She is a fine player and her seriousness and passion for Baroque cello and viol permeates through her playing. As someone who has benefited immensely from scholarships of this kind throughout my career, I know Jamie's ability to purchase a well-crafted viol bow will help her develop and expand her technical agility across the instrument and encourage her to explore more musical possibilities. She is a resourceful individual and I am confident she would embrace all of these learning opportunities.
Thank you for your consideration. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Deborah Pae

Recommendation for Jamie Gallupe
Dear Lisa,
I am writing on behalf of Jamie Gallupe in support of her application for a VdGSA Grant in Aid to help her purchase a professional-level bass viol bow.
I have known Jamie since the spring of 2016. She had come to visit her good friend who happened to be a student of mine at Peabody, and she had a baroque cello lesson with me. I subsequently got to know her better during our 2016 Conclave in Forest Grove, where she was in my technique class and had a couple of viol lessons with me and last summer in Ohio when she was in my barless Jenkins class. This fall she has begun studying toward a Master’s in baroque cello at Peabody. She is also doing a lot of gamba: weekly minor lessons, consort, playing in Brandenburg 6 next month, and joining the viols of the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble, in addition to continuing to sing in that ensemble.
She shows serious interest in the gamba. She bought a lovely Zuchowicz six-string from Lee Talner during the 2016 Conclave; returned as a custos for the 2017 Conclave; and seems to be really hooked. She calls Conclave her happy place. She has been working hard on the viol this semester and has made some impressive progress, for example learning to really read alto clef. She has started working on the first Telemann fantasia in c minor.
She shows great promise and real dedication.
The bow that she has now is adequate—I think it is a Chinese student model—but it is stiff and uninspiring. She is at a stage where she needs to develop a broader and more detailed palette of articulations and expression. I think a suitable bow that could complement the quality of her instrument would make a big difference for her. I understand that she has tried various models of bows from Harry Grabenstein and is hoping to be able to purchase a bow from him.
Jamie has a wonderful personality: sunny, responsible, and supportive of others. While it is impossible to predict the future, the viol is a great fit for her in every way, and I expect it to be a big part of her music making for many years to come. I highly recommend her for a GIA to allow her to buy a bow.
Sincerely,
John Moran, Ph.D.
