Project Description:

The applicant wishes to purchase a 7-string bass viola da gamba as well as a new bow. The instrument in question which the applicant used for the recordings provided with this application was made in China and set up in the USA. The applicant has been lucky to have this fine instrument on loan since January and has made huge strides both technically and musically on the viola da gamba. But, the applicant is now obliged to purchase the instrument in full from its original owner. Full purchase price for the instrument and a new bow totals 2,500. The applicant is currently seeking assistance elsewhere, including local scholarship funds and individual benefactors. To date, the applicant has successfully secured 750. Continued use of this instrument will allow this applicant to move forward in his pursuit of a career in early music performance.

Qualifications:

Cole Guillien is a masters candidate in Musicology at the University of Cincinnti College-Conservatory of Music where he is specializing in the study of music before 1750. He studies viola da gamba with Annalisa Pappano and is an active member of the early music performance scene in Cincinnati working with groups like the Catacoustic Consort, The Noyse Merchants, and the musicians of Christ Church Cathedral and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. This winter alone he was given the opportunity to perform the Three Tenebrae Lessons of Francois Couperin, the consort music including Great Dooble Bass of Orlando Gibbons, and the cantata BWV 106 Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit of JS Bach. He will be attending the Baroque Performance Institute this June on scholarship to study both gamba and baroque cello with Catharina Meints of Oberlin College. He is also registered to attend the VdGSAs annual Conclave at Miami University of Ohio in Oxford where he is hoping to receive a work-study grant. The applicant is taking very serious steps toward a profession in early music performance, specializing in viola da gamba and baroque cello. To this end, a Grant-in-Aid from your organization for the purchase of his first gamba would afford him the opportunity to continue in this path. Thank you kindly for your consideration.

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing this letter in support of Cole Guillien’s application for a Grant-in-Aid from the Viola da Gamba Society of America. Cole has been studying gamba technique and repertoire for nearly two years with Annalisa Pappano at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. It has been my pleasure to work with him there as well as in performances for Cincinnati’s Early Music Festival held this past February.

His aptitude for the viol and its consort music demonstrates his passion and drive in this field. This has been aided in no small part by the instrument which he is hoping to purchase with help from your organization. His ability to reach a broad palette of colors and textures both in consort and solo performance has been greatly enhanced and will surely continue to do so as he works more with this high quality bass viol.

Cole has made plans to attend the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College as well as the annual VdGSA Conclave at Miami University this summer. Purchasing an instrument will be vital for full participation in both programs. A Grant-in-Aid from this organization will make this possible. I strongly encourage you to consider offering this grant to Cole giving him the opportunity to grow with an exemplary instrument.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Sincerely,

James Lambert

To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept this letter of recommendation for a grant-in-aid for Cole Guillien. Cole began taking viola da gamba lessons with me last year at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, where he is a Masters student in musicology. He was quite interested in Renaissance and Medieval music and had a background in cello. Cole is a very bright young man and took to the viol and its music very quickly.

Cole’s enthusiasm for the viola da gamba and its music are contagious, and spreads through the class to the other students. He has substitute taught for my beginner viol class several times, as well. He comes to class with facscimiles and scores of the music we are playing, as well as background information on the music and composers – a welcome addition to our class! His musical sensitivity in consort is rewarding, and he is able to play treble, tenor, and bass viols equally well.

In addition, Cole has begun playing the viol professionally in our community and at the music conservatory – for students who are hungry to perform Baroque music and need bass line players. It is a welcome addition to Cincinnati! Cole will be performing with the Cincinnati Viol Consort for their February concert in the Cincinnati Early Music Festival.

Cole plans to attend either the Viola da Gamba Society Conclave or Oberlin’s Baroque Performance Institute this summer to further his education on the viol.

I strongly encourage the Viola da Gamba Society of America to offer a grant-in-aid to Cole Guillien to purchase a viola da gamba.

Sincerely,
Annalisa Pappano
