Project Description:

Powers Music School has a great potential for reaching a wider program for teaching the viola da gamba to its young students. However, finding a means to reach those students has been illusive. The school has a viol collection of 17 instruments, many of which are available for such a program. I propose offering two Demonstration/Group Lesson events early in each semester next year, inviting three other current Powers teachers who play the viol (Lisle Kulbach, Colleen McGary Smith and Sarah Freiburg, to assist me. This free event would be advertised on Powers' website and with flyers around the school, and coordinated with other Powers offerings. The School would provide space, publicity, and instruments. (The School already offers free viol rental to children who study at the School.) The Grant-in-Aid would be used to pay the 4 player/teachers for each of these 2 events, 90 min. sessions integrating listening and a hands-on experience of the viol for the students. (Limit would be 16 students, appropriate to the number of viols we have and teachers on hand to assist.) The amount applied for is $900: $100 for each of 2 sessions for the teachers ($400 x 2 = 800) and additional $50 for each of 2 sessions for the programmer/organizer (me) for a total of $900.

Qualifications:

I have been teaching at Powers most of my adult life. Most of the students who come to Powers are now elderly. Many who come to study privately do so after retirement, and then join Powers consorts (and stay for the rest of their lives!) I have had only four or five children in the time I have taught at Powers, and would like to have more young students. My only current long-term child student began in the 3rd grade and now is in the 10th. This year, he has learned the Telemann a minor sonata, a East duet and a Schenk sonata in C. If he is free for the above event, I would like to invite him to participate. He has formerly played with me for the BEMF VDGS-NE Petting Zoo and Family Day programs.

Dear Marie,

This note is in support of Jane Hershey's request regarding a program at Powers School in Belmont, MA involving demonstration and an introductory group lesson on the viol for 8-14 year old students.

As a student of Ms. Hershey for >40 years, I can attest to her capabilities at all aspects of viol teaching and organization of viol classes.
The resources at Powers seem well suited to the project she proposes, and the project would be an excellent use of the Grant-in-aid program and demonstrate an extension of its utility beyond the conventional use for adult students.

I hope that the request will be approved.

Best wishes,

Chester Pearlman

Dear Ms. Szuts,
I am writing this letter of support for the grant proposal prepared by one
of our faculty members, Jane Hershey. Powers Music School is extremely
interested in providing opportunities for youth to become exposed and
interested to the musical potential of our current inventory of gambas. We
will be supporting this proposal in any way possible including providing a
location for the proposed workshop and administrative support for print
materials associated with the marketing and day of activities of the
workshop.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me with further
questions. We look forward to hosting this proposed workshop in the fall
of 2016.
Sincerely,
