Project Description:
The goal of this project is to provide two of the rental program custodians of the Viola da Gamba Society, Motomi Igarashi and Mike Twyford, with the opportunity to improve our skills by studying and working under Sarah Peck of Sarah W. Peck Violins (https://www.sarahwpeckviolins.com/) in Philadelphia. This mentorship program will span one weekend, during which we receive hands-on training focused on maintaining pegs and peg holes, setting sound posts and bridges, and other crucial aspects of keeping the instruments in good shape.
Goal:
Gaining advanced knowledge and skills for viol care will better equip me to handle the various minor troubles that arise with rental instruments, and allow me to maintain them at a higher standard. This will benefit the Viola da Gamba Society rental program by making sure that the instruments are in top playable condition.
Budget:
The total cost of this mentorship program is $1500, which includes Sarah's fee for her time, materials, and travel expenses. The breakdown of expenses is as follows:
• Two full days of mentorship to Sarah Peck for two apprentices (2 days total): $1200
• Transportation fee: $150 (Motomi Igarashi from NYC. ) Mike Twyford is applying separately for a GiA to cover this travel from Miami, Florida)
• Materials and supplies: $150
Conclusion:
This mentorship program with Sarah W. Peck Violins represents a unique and valuable opportunity to advance the instrument maintenance capabilities of two of the instrument custodians of the Viola da Gamba Society. I am confident that the knowledge and skills I gain through this mentorship will benefit the musicians who rent the instruments. This contributes to the broader goals of the society and supports the community of musicians who play the viola da gamba, creating a more informed and skilled community overall.

Qualifications:
I have been playing Viola da Gamba for over 30 years. I professionally play viola da gamba, violone, double bass, and Lirone. I am a principal Bass player for the Boston Baroque. I have been working as a custodian for the rental program since the program started under Kathleen Merfeld. Since then it has become clear that I need to know how to maintain the viola da gamba. It is a necessary skill. I attended the violin workshop and learned the basics several years ago, so I have rudimentary general skills. This apprenticeship will allow me to hone those skills for the work required to maintain the society's rental program instruments.
