Project Description:

Project Description (what funds are needed for):

I am seeking funds to help pay for repairs to my Garmi bass which suffered shoulder damage when another player fell and collided with it while it was in playing position. The instrument has a lovely sound and is responsive in all ranges. It has been my musical companion for many decades, since I was given the chance to graduate from my starter viol, an instrument with much in common with a starter cello. Having been its beneficiary and steward for so long, I felt compelled to take it for restoration even though repair was more in my price range. At the time I was optimistic that I would recover the ability to fund a restoration and I still am. However, this recovery has not happened yet and it would be extremely helpful if the cost could be covered.

----
Total cost of project: Due to some collective generosity, the quoted charge is 2425.

----
Proposal to cover the difference:
I will take a loan from retirement savings or use one of the last two bits of my non-retirement savings.

Currently I am playing in a university consort and casually with other local players. In the time since the bass was damaged, I have been the beneficiary of several loans including a short term loan of a bass and an on-going loan of a local society treble. Playing treble has been a good experience and it has been reassuring to know that the bass was in a safe place. However, having needed at several other junctures to do a lot of catch-up to recover skills, I am becoming a bit concerned about my loss of skill, and even more importantly, my responsibility to the person who has done the work.

Hi Lisa,
I would like to put in a good word for Anne Lazarides re a grant to help her pay for an instrument repair.
There was a rather tragic accident at one of the local consort sessions in Chapel Hill and her (lovely Garmy) viol was in the wrong place at the wrong time. After agonizing over how to get it repaired, and by whom, she finally found someone in DC and got the viol repaired. In the meantime, however, she had some extenuating financial circumstances and is no longer able to pay for the repair. The viol has been waiting to be picked up for ages, and I know this situation has been weighing on her.
I personally do not know how much the repair cost, but I would be very grateful if my student could receive aid to get her instrument back. (And hopefully start lessons again!). She is a really fine player, and I know she would be very appreciative of any help the VDGSA could give her, as would I.
Thank you very much for your consideration of this matter.
Sincerely,
Gail Ann Schroeder

Dear Lisa,
I would like to formally recommend Anne Lazarides for a grant to support the repair of her bass viol. The instrument was actually damaged during a playing session. The stool on which I was sitting collapsed, and as I slid to the floor, the scroll of my viol crashed into the shoulder of Anne’s bass. My insurance won’t pay anything, nor will that of the homeowner where the accident happened, and Anne did not have special insurance on the instrument. Anne is a dedicated and gifted player, a real asset to our local chapter. She has persevered during her deprivation, becoming quite proficient on a borrowed treble and continuing to take lessons with Gail Ann Schroeder. I know she misses her lovely bass.
I realize that many (most) of our grants have gone to younger players headed for careers involving the viol, however the heart of our organization is the dedicated amateur who is devoted to the instrument for the love of it. A player like Anne deserves our support through this hard patch. I hope the Society can find a way to help lift some of her financial burden.
Thanks!
Kathy
