Project Description:
Project Description (what funds are needed for):
I would like the funds to go toward purchase of a tenor viol, John Rose model ca.1600, ordered
three years ago from Judith Kraft in Paris. It is due to be finished in June. Due to the Corona Virus, my income has taken a hit; several well paying concerts have been cancelled. I had saved up almost the entire amount for the tenor, and was counting on what I would earn this spring to get the full amount. Instead I find myself having to help out one of my daughters and her kids financially, and not able to put money away.
Rather than asking Judith Kraft if I can pay off slowly what I am short, I am hoping the VdGSA would be willing to help me out.
I am and have been for the past 4/5 years the designated tenor player of the Arcadia Viols, but I do not own a tenor. I have been practicing on inadequate loaners that Jane (Hershey) finds for me, and in concert have played Alice Robbins' or Jane’s tenor, often sharing them back and forth with one of them. There is an urgent need to own an excellent tenor that can live up to the fantastic quality of the consort's sound, and the waiting time has been very long. Arcadia Viols has several concerts coming up in the fall, and I was looking forward to being able to practice and perform on my new tenor. Delaying the delivery would be a bummer, both for Judith Kraft, and for Jane, Alice and me.

Total cost of project: 10,000 Euros (about $11,000 as of today's exchange rate)

Proposal to cover the difference:
I have saved up $8,500, and have already paid a 1000 Euro deposit. If worst comes to worst, I could and probably would take out a home equity loan and pay it off slowly.

Qualifications:
I began playing the viol shortly before my 50th year, having been a professional cellist. I fell in love with it and soon decided to go back to school. In 2009/2010 I studied with Jane Hershey at the Longy School, obtaining a Graduate Performance diploma in Early Music, major viola da gamba, minor baroque cello (with Phoebe Carrai). Since then my professional life has been centered around the viol, as a soloist, continuo player, and a member of the viol consorts Arcadia Viols and Long & Away. The past few years with Arcadia Viols have been a highlight of my musical career. We have played many wonderful concerts in our area as well as with Stile Antico and the Folger Consort in Washington DC and NY City. For Long & Away I was the executive producer of a CD of the music of Samuel Capricornus, which involved 14 musicians. The $20,000 funds were mainly raised by me through crowdfunding and grants (including from VdGSA). I have researched and developed several other programs for Long & Away; currently I am working on an adaptation of our program of music from the time of the Dutch-Spanish 80 years war to center around the Pilgrims' 10 year sojourn in the Netherlands before embarking on the Mayflower.
