Of all the names associated with this, Cathy's is the only one I know... but that's a huge one. I guess we'll wait and see whether we'll get that chance to hit the board up for more moolah (as they have requested!).

Michael Lynn is the Baroque flute (and recorder?) teacher at Oberlin, so his recommendation should carry weight although he can't speak to string-specific issues.
And yes, here's the chance to fund more projects!
I am assuming that we still have $9000 to work with for the year. If we were to give Leonardo what he's asking then we would be at our limit for the half year. But, as David gleefully says, our opportunity to ask for MORE may be at hand if we get more applications by next Sunday. Maybe asking for more is what Lisa means by being generous!?
Project Description:
I am at a point in my studies that I need a better bow to further develop my viol playing . However, I come from Brazil, a third world country, and I cannot afford a professional bow. Being an international student limits severely my options for employment in the U.S. Therefore, this grant would allow me to take a big step in my studies and career.

I am currently a MM student on viola da gamba at Oberlin Conservatory, where I study with Cathy Meints. I also play violone and I have weekly lessons with Tracy Rowells. My BM was in Double bass performance at University of North Texas, where I played in the baroque orchestra under the direction of Paul Leenhouts.

Hi Lisa,
I hope you are well!! Leo has asked that I write a recommendation for him to help him get a grant to purchase a new viol bow.
Though, obviously, I am not Leo’s private teacher, I have worked with him quite a bit this year at Oberlin. He has played in a number of ensembles which I have coached and was in the Historical Performance in Context course I taught this semester. I have also heard him in performance quite a number of times. He is also starting a graduate research project with me. I think Leo is very deserving of your help. I’m sure he has very little money available to him. He has done a very good job on all the things I have worked with him on. He takes his work seriously but also enjoys it. His positive attitude is well received by both the faculty and other students. I think he is quite well liked and appreciated for his enthusiasm. He has made excellent progress in his gamba playing, especially this semester. One of the things I really appreciate about Leo is that he is quite engaged intellectually. He seems to have a natural curiosity about sources and instruments that are helping him to build a firm base to his knowledge.
I really enjoy Leo and I would say my appreciation for him increases the more I work with him. I’m sure he faces huge challenges being here in the US and going to a high-power, and expensive, school like Oberlin. Despite those challenges he is doing fine work and would be a great recipient of your support.

I am recommending Leo Lima for a grant in aid application. Leo has been an interesting student coming into the masters program this year. He is intensely motivated and works extremely hard. As a bass player he has had habits to modify and, frankly, I have been surprised at some of his musical deficiencies as an entering masters student. However he is very open about working on them and has made great progress. He enjoys the violone/ double bass aspect of HP and has been concentrating his research at that end. He also enjoys the earlier side of HP more than much past 1710, but I'm OK with that (I guess!) He's a great colleague with his peers and I have enjoyed working with him.
