Project Description:

PROJECT PROPOSAL
My goal is secure funding to help purchase a new treble viol, bow and case to use for teaching treble viol students. This would allow me to have an instrument with good sound quality to teach with. This would greatly aid in my ability to demonstrate and cultivate the techniques of good sound production in my students.
I currently own a bass viol made by Francois Bodart in 1996, purchased from Julie Elhard in 2017. I am using a tenor viol and treble viol, on loan temporarily from the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music (SPCM) where I teach viola da gamba. These two instruments are not a long-term viable option for my use in teaching because they may eventually need to be loaned out to students at the SPCM, which is the intended use for these instruments owned by the SPCM. Additionally, being a teacher of viola da gamba it is expected that I own the instrument I am teaching, just as a violin teacher owns a violin.
I am planning to attend the VdGSA Conclave this summer, at which time I will have the opportunity to try several treble viols from vendors. I feel that this would be the ideal time to try out instruments and possibly purchase one since several makers and retailers of instruments will be available in one place. I am hesitant to “blindly” purchase an instrument online, not being able to easily try out the instruments in advance of purchase. Much of what I work on with my viol students is sound quality, and having an instrument that has the characteristics I am looking for in the sound (namely, good bow response, a colorful resonating sound, and the ability to produce nuanced articulations) is crucial in order to demonstrate and cultivate these skills in my students.

Request Amount:

1500

Total Project Cost:

$

2400

Budget and Additional Funding:

Sources of income to cover the remaining cost of the instrument include up to $1000 in self-payment. If the instrument ends up costing more than the VDGSA Grant-in-Aid award plus my $1000 contribution, then I will apply for an MRAC Next-Step Fund grant. This MRAC grant can provide up to $5000 for individual projects that are needed to move artists closer to their goals. The next application deadline is January 2023.
(See attached documents for budget table.)

Qualifications:

As a PERFORMER: I am a professional Baroque cellist and violist da gamba who regularly performs and teaches all sizes of the viola da gamba. I began taking lessons on bass viol with Julie Elhard in 2017. I have received additional training in viola da gamba through workshops and masterclasses at the American Bach Soloists Academy, the Amherst Early Music Festival and the International Baroque Institute at Longy. In 2018 I began performing professionally on the gamba in performances around the Upper Midwest. I am currently the principal cellist and violist da gamba for the early music ensemble, La Grande Bande – a unique ensemble that brings Historical Performance to some of the most rural communities in Minnesota through performances and outreach, in addition to an extensive online concert library and venues of the Twin Cities. I have also performed with Lyra Baroque Orchestra and the Bach Society of Minnesota, as well as numerous Early Music performances and projects around the Upper Midwest.
As a TEACHER: I believe in cultivating a love of music in each and every student. On viola da gamba, I teach younger beginning students using Julie Elhard’s Passamezzo Method, utilizing a child-centered approach to develop students’ technique, ensemble skills, and love of music making. As students progress, we move on to more difficult repertoire of the Renaissance and Baroque while continuing to refine technique and ensemble skills. For adult students, my teaching approach is more varied and depends on the learning styles and specific goals of the student.
In addition to teaching private lessons, I also coach students in viola da gamba ensembles at the SPCM. In these ensembles, students get to hone their skills in playing with others, and learn the art of collaboration in the context of historical performance practice while discussing and trying out different musical interpretations. I thoroughly enjoy coaching students and facilitating discussions amongst the ensemble on historical performance practices and context, analyzing the music, and ways to listen and play off of one another, and bring the music to life.

Dear John Moran,
I have known Maryne Mossey since 2017. It has been wonderful to see how she has developed as a gamba player. We met because she needed to purchase music for learning viol and I have the music she needed. Since then, we have been in some small groups and classes together. Now she is the instructor for our adult viol group.
She has become a wonderful teacher for viol and cello. She has private students and also groups of adult students. She is a kind and thoughtful coach and teacher.
She has done some wonderful concerts and recitals. I have seen her playing with Lyra and Le Grande Band, but also with one or two friends.
It would be helpful for her to have a good treble viol of her own. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me,
