I like this application, and in the absence of any others I provisionally support it for the full amount. However, she hasn't completed the application materials - we don't know either the full cost of the instrument or how she proposes to make up the difference. So that must be completed. Does anyone else see anything else missing?
This is why I was keen on having the Prez vet applications before they made it to the website - now there's some more back and forth before we can act on it. Thus,
answers to these and any other questions will probably come after Oct 15, but I suggest we overlook that in this case (no one need know) because if everything is tidy, I think this is supportable. But I return to my request that we not see applications until they're complete.
I would also like to know where on earth there is an MA in early renaissance viol consort repertoire. I'd like to go there too.
I would want to know how she plans to get the instrument to the Canadian Northwest since that seems to be where she is now. I will alert John to these questions now and maybe she can supply the answers by the deadline tomorrow.
And Jack, I was wondering about an MA in early renaissance viol rep too. I think she would have to make it a special project in one of the early music programs. She also appears to have been able to somehow finance travel and living arrangements for study in England. As Sarah says, "an interesting young woman with her own unique path."
Yes, I was wondering about her financial situation as well. But I don't understand that to have entered into our considerations before unless we're comparing different canddidates for a limited amount of money. Here she appears to be the only one, and the Lord gives to them who ask, etc., so although I did pause about that I decided not to worry about it.
I suppose she'll just have the viol shipped to BC, but this begs the question anew of whether she actually needs this grant. On the other hand, the more grants we give the better publicity the GIA program receives, and hopefully gets to the people who really do need it. As most of our applicants have, in fact.

When I first discovered the tenor viol during my BA studies, I knew that I had to own one. I have played on all the different sizes of viol and the tenor viol is my favourite one. Over three years ago I commissioned a tenor viol to be built by the English viol maker Jane Julier. It is based after an anonymous English instrument dated to 1600s and has a string length of 56cm. This instrument Is currently being built and will be finished by mid November 2020.

Proposal to cover the difference:
In order to help fund my viol purchase, I sold my bass viol while I was living in England. This contributed £1350, or about $1749.00 according to Jane's receipt. I have also worked at a local museum as a summer job over the past two years, and have organized and performed in a number of fund-raising concerts.
As a university student, continuing with my music studies is expensive and has made saving for an instrument more complicated. I have also, regrettably, not been able to give additional concerts since March, due to the ongoing COVID crisis.
As of now, I will have managed to raise approximately $6093 by the time the instrument is ready, which unfortunately leaves me $3478 short. A grant from the VDGSA would significantly decrease this amount. And my parents have also offered to loan me money, (with interest) to help cover the difference, as well as the (as yet unknown) cost of shipping and purchasing a case for the viol.

I have been playing viol since I was 19 years old when I bought my Uebel bass viol. In 2016 I received my BA in Renaissance lute from the University of York, UK. During my studies, I had many opportunities to play viol, and I was fortunate to study viol with Susanna Pell. I helped organize and played in three concurrent viol ensembles. Some of my activities included organizing rehearsals, room bookings, giving one on one mini lessons, procuring music, and generally helping out with coaching sessions when Susanna was unable to come.
As a viol player, I have given many viol concerts, performing works by Byrd, Buxtehude, Holborne, and Gibbons, among others. A highlight for me was playing tenor and bass viols for a York Christmas Early Music Festival Concert. More recently, performances at home include playing for a Christmas church service, and in a local concert that I organized.
Since my return from England, I have had less opportunity for viol playing, as I live in a rural area and I did not own a viol. I rented a tenor for a year from the VdGSA. In 2017, I studied for a year at The Longy School of Music Of Bard Collage in Cambridge, MA and had access to viols to play. I am now studying for a BFA in Art History at Concordia in Montreal. My plan was to move there to continue with my music studies. Unfortunately, this has been put on hold do to Covid. However, I now have high speed internet access at home and I will be able to continue my music lessons online.
My goal is to hopefully find a place to continue my music studies with an MA in early renaissance viol consort repertoire. (I have yet to find a program for this) I’m deeply committed to early music and its promotion to a larger audience. I will continue to promote and give concerts on viols. Owning a good quality instrument will help with my growth as a viol player and musician and allow me to improve my skills.
