Project Description:
Dear GiA Committee,
This grant would be to purchase a new bow from maker Francis Beaulieu. Last year, I bought my first Bass Gamba before starting my undergrad at Peabody for viol performance. The instrument did not come with a bow, and I have since been using a bow not so well suited for a bass viol. John Moran has been talking to Francis Beaulieu about trying some bows of his, and thought I should try some as well.
Francis is a newer maker for bows, though he has made a few viols before, one of which John has.
I reached out to Francis about his bows, and he gave the cost at $1700. Sometime soon (before conclave, but we don't know for sure when), he will be sending a shipment of different bows to John Moran for me (and others in MDVA) to try out. At the moment, I don't have any particular model or type of bow that I'm specifically looking for, so getting to try a variety of bows will be great in helping me decide which I would want. Once we do get the bows (ideally soon), I can choose which to purchase.
Without the grant, I do not think I will be able to purchase a real bow for quite some time. There's always a chance I come across something, but not like this. Having the opportunity to purchase a nice bow this early in my years at Peabody will be a giant weight off my shoulders, and will push my playing even further than where it can go now.
Thank you!

Budget and Additional Funding:
Francis Beaulieu indicated that usually he has buyers pay for shipping, but that in this instance he may not (there are many of us potentially buying at the same time). However, if any additional costs do occur during the purchase, I can most likely cover them personally
Qualifications:
I'm a somewhat experienced player, who started taking the instrument very seriously about a year ago. I've been playing the viol since 2018, taking lessons in high school. I was primarily a Double Bass player for many years, studying Bass performance at UNM while also taking viol lessons and playing in their Early music ensemble. Last year, I decided to fully focus on the viol. I bought my first instrument and auditioned for the Peabody Institute. I also attended my first conclave last year. Now I'm in my first year of Viol Performance at Peabody with John Moran and gaining as much experience as I can.
