Project Description:
I am applying to study vielle with Anna Danilevskaia of the renowned Sollazzo Ensemble, specifically focusing on the late-15th-century manuscript The Leuven Chansonnier, at one of the "Early Music Seminars Egida Sartori and Laura Alvini" at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, June 17-21, 2024. The weeklong seminar culminates in a performance. Not only would this opportunity be a unique learning experience as a vielle player and medieval music professional, it would also be an important opportunity to network with European peers in the field of medieval and early renaissance music.

M&IE (as listed by State Dept.): $208/day = $1040**
**This is what the State Dept. lists. Actual costs will be lower: the Cini Scholarship covers “partial board” but doesn’t elaborate on what is and isn’t covered.

Whatever isn’t covered by the VdGSA Grant-In-Aid or the Giorgio Cini Scholarship will be personally covered by the applicant.
Qualifications:
I have played viol for seventeen years (started at age 13), and am currently a professional viola da gamba and vielle player. I am a founding member of the medieval ensemble Alkemie, whose program “Sweet Friendship” includes music from the source this seminar focuses on. I am currently one of the most widely-heard vielle players in the world, having been featured in over a dozen big-budget and indie film, streaming series, and video game soundtracks. In 2012, I received a VdGSA Grant-in-Aid to study at the “Settimo Corso Internazionale di Musica Antica Ottaviano Alberti” in Orte, Italy, where I studied with Friederike Heumann. I formally studied Italian language for two years.
