Uh oh...how much Monopoly Money do we have in our account? Another set of sterling references (although I'd be interested in talking to the fellas before making any decisions), and another even larger chunk o' change. Just wondering...
OK kids, we may be in trouble this year. Alas, bless her and Craig, I wonder whether if we give Kate $1000 or even $3000 it will make the slightest difference, whether she has a plan of where she wants to get an instrument, etc. etc., but for heavens' sake, she is 17 and one of our brightest hopes. My spies tell me that Marie D is also going to be applying for an ensemble thing, so I guess step one is to stay strictly within the deadlines for application, but my next guess is that is not going to help very much, and I'm really glad to be off this committee! Maybe I should try harder to increase the endowment, but at the expense of something else? However, I have complete faith in your communal adjudicative abilities. WG
Well, I think there's some information we need before we can go on...
1) can we get a history of past grants - recipients and amounts - since the GIA was founded?
2) is this a rolling grant or do we have one (or two?) deadlines a year?
3) do we have an exact amount up to which we can go in any one granting period?
4) do we compare requests to each other and rank them, or just give every worthy person a certain chunk of the pot (whatever that is)?
I'm sure this stuff is all out there and known by the others, but I could use some clear guidelines.
You know, $1500 might at least get her a good part of the way towards getting a Chinese viol...if things are really that bad. I'm just sayin'!

I need help in purchasing a professional quality bass viola da gamba. My teacher, Craig Trompeter, has advised me that the cost of such an instrument could be between 10,000 and 15,000 dollars.

Qualifications:
I have been taking lessons on the viola da gamba for over six years; the first two with John Mark Rozendaal and the following four with Craig Trompeter. For the past three, I have focused on the bass with the personal goal of becoming the best violist da gamba possible. To that end, I have attended VdGSA Conclave for five years, BPI for three years, numerous master classes and workshops, and the Viola da Gamba Consort Class at the Music Institute of Chicago. Also, I have performed with Northwestern University's Early Music Ensemble under the direction of Mary Springfels and several graduate recitals. I hope to start the pursuit of my Bachelors Degree, next fall, as a viola da gamba performance major.

Katie Shuldiner has asked me to write in support of a Grant-in-Aid
proposal she is making to the VdGSA board. We all know how extraordinary
this young woman is as a musician, performer and personality. This is a
person who will maximize any opportunity that we offer her in terms of
equipment, education or visibility. Her growth as a gambist since all of
us first heard her at age 13 has been amazing. I say give her the grant!

This is my letter of recommendation on behalf of Kate Shuldiner's
forthcoming application for a grant in aid. I can't think of a more
needy, deserving applicant for an award. Kate is working so very hard
on her playing and really is suffering not having a working instrument
that she can call her own. If she could have a good viol to use she'd
just take off to great heights, I think.
