Project Description:
My name is Beth Vanderborgh and I teach cello at the University of Wyoming, where I hope to kindle a new focus in historical performance practice. In my earlier days, I studied performance practice/baroque cello with Ken Slowik as a DMA student at the University of Maryland.
This past year I convinced my department to purchase a bass viol, which we found on the VGDSA classifieds (Robert Plant) . In addition, I applied for a faculty research grant which has enabled me to take lessons this entire year with Ann Marie Morgan (in Denver) and to purchase books and supplies.
My students at UW are entranced by the possibility of studying the viola da gamba. After a year of intensive study, I feel confident in my ability to teach beginners. Our problem is that we only have one viol.
So, to my proposal for Grant-in-Aid. I respectfully request funding in the amount of $500 to rent an additional bass viol from Ann Marie Morgan. For the 10-month academic year, it would cost $500.
With two Viols, I will be able to work more efficiently with UW students who have become intrigued and captivated by the beautiful sonority of the Viol. My long term plan is to build our inventory of instruments at UW and establish an active group of gamba players. I also hope to purchase a bass viol for my personal use.
UPDATE: see additional documents for updated proposal and funding request.

Budget and Additional Funding:
While I don't have matching funds for the Grant-in-Aid proposal, I have applied for funding from UW to invite Ann Marie Morgan as guest artist for a "Viol Day" next year. The proposed event will be free and open to the regional public.
Qualifications:
I have played the viola da gamba for almost 1 year, during which time I have taken regular lessons with Ann Marie Morgan. I have performed two concerts. I believe I am a good fit for this funding request - I have the passion and determination to make things happen here at the University of Wyoming.
