Dear Marie,
I recently attended an early music workshop in Minnesota directed by Julie Elhard. One of the members of my workshop group, Chris Zerendow, was a young man who was playing bass viol. He told me he was trying to purchase a bass because he had been using a borrowed one. It was going to be hard for him to pay for one because he had lost his job. He also has two small children. We talked about the Grant-in-aid Program of the VdGSA that might benefit him because he is a member.
I am writing this letter in support of Chris' application. He is an enthusiastic player and has told me he loves playing the viol. He is a student of Julie Elhard and plays with others at least two to three times a week. He played guitar when he was a child and is very happy to be back playing music again.
I think Chris would be an excellent candidate for the Grant-in-aid Program and highly recommend his receiving a grant.

Dear VdGSA Grant in Aid Committee:
I would like to highly recommend my student, Chris Zerendow, for a grant in aid to be used for the purchase of a bass viola da gamba. Chris has studied with me for only two years beginning with the tenor viol and then adding the bass viol in the same year. He is a diligent and dedicated student, both intuitive and curious.
In just two years Chris has learned to read in three clefs and is playing solo as well as ensemble and consort music. Chris is a thoughtful, self-motived learner with an
artist’s sensibilities making him well suited to the subtleties of viol literature. Chris is an active amateur player and initiates playing opportunities with others in our community. He has performed solo music by Ortiz and is learning some selections from the Suite for Viol and Orchestra by Telemann. He is a new member of my Intermediate Viol Consort where we are preparing Byrd’s Fantasia No. 2 for a public performance this spring.
Chris has been renting a bass viol from The Saint Paul Conservatory of Music, which has completely come apart at the seams (and I mean literally) over the course of our harsh winter. It is literally being “tied†up in ropes to keep it held together. The used Chinese bass viol Chris intends to buy is something he needs to continue his pursuit of viol playing and being an active and supportive member of our community. I hope you will give Chris serious consideration and support his application for grant funds to help him purchase his first viola da gamba.
